You often carry gear on the roof. What is an advantage of an enclosed roof box over an open load strapped to roof bars?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code makes you responsible for your load and its effect on the vehicle. A smooth enclosed roof box creates less wind resistance and noise than loose items on open roof bars, so it uses less extra fuel, though the load must still be secure and within the weight limits.
