Alertness

You are passing a bus that has stopped at a bus stop. Why should you slow down and stay alert?

  • The bus may reverse towards you
  • You must always stop behind a bus
  • Pedestrians may step out into the road from in front of the bus
    Correct
  • The bus driver will wave you past

Why?

People who have just left the bus, or are hurrying to catch it, may cross without looking and are hidden by the bus. Rule 206 of The Highway Code says you should drive carefully and slowly when passing bus and tram stops, as pedestrians may emerge suddenly into the road.
