Alertness

You are driving in a dark, unlit street at night. How should this change the way you drive?

  • Drive faster to spend less time in the dark
  • Stay extra alert, as pedestrians in dark clothing are hard to see
    Correct
  • Use your main beam even when traffic is coming
  • There is no need to change anything

Why?

In the dark, people, cyclists and animals can appear with little warning, especially if they are not wearing bright clothing. Rule 146 of The Highway Code says you should drive defensively and adapt to the road and conditions, anticipating hazards you cannot yet see clearly.
