You MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency

You may enter it to overtake slower traffic
You may straddle it whenever the road is busy
You can cross it freely if no one is nearby

Why?

Rule 130 of The Highway Code says an area marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines MUST NOT be entered except in an emergency. These markings keep traffic apart, so stay out of them.
