Essential documents

You change your car's colour or fit a different engine. What must you do?

  • Tell the DVLA so the V5C is kept up to date
    Correct
  • Nothing, as these details are never recorded
  • Only tell the garage that did the work
  • Buy a brand-new V5C from a shop

Why?

The registered keeper must tell the DVLA about changes to the vehicle, such as its colour or engine, so the V5C registration certificate stays correct. Keeping the V5C accurate is part of the document rules in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
