Essential documents
You sell your car to another person. What must you do with the vehicle registration certificate (V5C)?
- Keep it yourself as proof you once owned the car
- Destroy it, since it's no longer needed
- Fill in the new keeper's details and send the relevant section to the DVLACorrect
- Give it to your insurance company instead of the buyer
Why?
The V5C registration certificate shows who is registered as the vehicle's keeper. Annex 3 of The Highway Code explains that when you sell a vehicle, you must notify the DVLA of the change of keeper by completing and sending the relevant part of the V5C, so the registration stays accurate and up to date.
