Essential documents

You are keeping a car off the road and do not want to tax or insure it. What must you do?

  • Nothing, as an untaxed car needs no paperwork
  • Sell it within 14 days
  • Return the number plates to the DVLA
  • Make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) to the DVLA
    Correct

Why?

If you take a vehicle off the road and stop taxing and insuring it, you must tell the DVLA by making a SORN, a Statutory Off Road Notification. The vehicle must then be kept off public roads, for example on a drive or in a garage. Vehicle tax is listed among the documents in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
