Essential documents

A learner driver wants to practise in a private car. What insurance is needed?

  • No insurance is needed while still learning
  • Insurance that covers the learner to drive that car
    Correct
  • Only the supervisor needs to be insured
  • A house insurance policy is enough

Why?

A learner must be insured to drive the car they practise in, just like any other driver. This can be their own learner insurance or being added to the car owner's policy. Driving with no valid insurance is against the law. Insurance is a required document in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
