An experienced driver builds up 12 or more penalty points within three years. What normally happens?
- They are disqualified from driving for at least 6 monthsCorrect
- The points are cancelled automatically
- They must retake only the theory test
- Nothing changes until they reach 20 points
Why?
Under the totting-up rules, a driver who collects 12 or more penalty points within three years is usually disqualified by a court for at least 6 months. Penalty points and disqualification are set out in Annex 5 of The Highway Code, which lists the penalties for driving offences.
