Essential documents

You move to a new home. What must you do about your driving licence?

  • Nothing, as your address is not on the licence
  • Tell the DVLA so your licence shows the new address
    Correct
  • Wait until the licence next needs renewing
  • Only tell your car insurer, not the DVLA

Why?

You must tell the DVLA when you change your address so your driving licence and vehicle registration show the correct details. It is free to do and it is an offence not to update them. Keeping your documents correct is part of the rules in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
