Essential documents

You are buying a used car that is more than three years old. What document should you check for its roadworthiness?

  • The vehicle's service brochure
  • Its current MOT certificate and test history
    Correct
  • The manufacturer's advert
  • A photograph of the car

Why?

A car over three years old must have a valid MOT certificate showing it recently met the minimum safety and environmental standards. Checking the MOT certificate and its online history helps you avoid buying an unroadworthy car. The MOT is one of the documents in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
