Essential documents

You buy a used car from a private seller. What must you do about the vehicle tax before you drive it away?

  • Nothing, as the seller's tax passes to you
  • Tax it after driving it home
  • Tax the vehicle in your name before you drive it
    Correct
  • Wait for the DVLA to tax it for you

Why?

Vehicle tax no longer transfers with the car when it is sold. As the new keeper you must tax the vehicle in your own name before you drive it, and you also need insurance. Vehicle tax and registration are listed among the documents in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
