Essential documents

You passed your car test recently and want to tow a small trailer. What does your category B licence allow?

  • You may never tow a trailer on a car licence
  • You must always pass a separate trailer test first
  • You can tow a trailer within the weight limits without a separate test
    Correct
  • You may only tow a trailer on private land

Why?

Since the rules changed in December 2021, a category B car licence lets you tow a trailer up to the allowed weight limits without taking a separate trailer test. The combined weight of car and trailer must stay within the limit. Licence categories are covered in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
