Essential documents

When must a vehicle be taxed (have Vehicle Excise Duty paid)?

  • Only if it is more than three years old
  • When it is kept or used on a public road
    Correct
  • Only when you drive it on a motorway
  • Only after it fails its MOT test

Why?

Vehicle tax, also called Vehicle Excise Duty, must be paid for any vehicle kept or used on a public road. If a vehicle is kept off the road and not taxed, you must instead make a SORN. Vehicle Excise Duty is one of the vehicle documents listed in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
