What can happen if the police catch you driving with no insurance at all?

  • You are given a spoken warning only
  • You must insure the car within 30 days
  • You can get a £300 fixed penalty, 6 penalty points and have the vehicle seized

Why?

Driving with no insurance is a serious offence. The police can give a £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points, and they can seize the vehicle. If the case goes to court you can face an unlimited fine and disqualification. Insurance is a legal requirement listed in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
