Essential documents

A police officer asks to see your documents, but you don't have them with you. What can you do?

  • Refuse, since you're not required to carry documents
  • Produce them at a police station within 7 days
    Correct
  • Post copies to the officer within one month
  • You'll automatically lose your licence

Why?

You don't have to carry your documents in the car, but if a police officer asks and you don't have them, Annex 3 of The Highway Code says you can produce your insurance, MOT certificate and driving licence at a police station of your choice within 7 days.
