Hazard awareness

You are following a bus that has stopped at a bus stop. Its right indicator begins to flash. What should you anticipate?

  • The bus will stay at the stop for several minutes
  • You have priority and should pass quickly
  • The bus is about to pull out, so be ready to let it go
    Correct
  • The bus driver is telling you to overtake

Why?

Rule 223 of The Highway Code says give priority to buses when you can do so safely, especially when they signal to pull away from stops. A flashing indicator warns that the bus is about to move off, so anticipate it and hold back.
