When driving on a motorway, why should you look through and beyond the vehicle directly in front of you?

To read the number plate of that vehicle
To spot developing hazards, such as brake lights further ahead, in good time
Correct
So you can safely drive closer behind it
There is no benefit; only the car in front matters

Why?

Rule 126 says drive so you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear, and Rule 146 says be prepared for changing situations. Looking beyond the car in front lets you see brake lights several vehicles away — a developing hazard — so you can react early.
