Hazard awareness

You are driving on an unlit country road at night. How fast should you drive?

  • As fast as the speed limit allows, to get home sooner
  • Fast enough to keep up with any car behind you
  • Only as fast as you can stop within the distance lit by your headlights
    Correct
  • The same speed you would use on the same road in daylight

Why?

Rule 126 says drive at a speed that lets you stop well within the distance you can see to be clear, and Rule 125 says reduce speed at night. On an unlit road your headlights limit how far you can see, so slow down for bends, animals and pedestrians.

Highway Code rules 126, 125
