Hazard awareness

The vehicle ahead is towing a caravan that is swaying from side to side. What is the safest action?

  • Keep well back and do not try to overtake until it is safe
    Correct
  • Drive close behind to help steady the caravan
  • Overtake immediately, whatever the road ahead is like
  • Flash your headlights to make it speed up

Why?

Rule 126 and Rule 151 say keep a safe distance so you can always stop safely. A swaying (snaking) caravan is unstable and may move unpredictably, so hold well back and only pass when you have a long, clear view.

Highway Code rules 126, 151
