Hazard awareness

At night you are dazzled by the headlights of an oncoming vehicle. What should you do?

  • Keep staring at the oncoming lights so you can watch them
  • Switch on your own full beam to match them
  • Slow down and, if necessary, stop until you can see clearly
    Correct
  • Close your eyes for a moment until they pass

Why?

Rule 115 of The Highway Code says at night use dipped headlights, and if you are dazzled, slow down or stop until you can see clearly. Do not speed up or reply with full beam, as that dazzles others too.
