Hazard awareness

A delivery van is stopped ahead at the kerb with its hazard warning lights flashing. What should you anticipate?

  • The van will drive off the moment you approach
  • Nothing, as hazard lights mean it is safe to ignore
  • The driver may step out or walk around the van into the road
    Correct
  • The van will reverse quickly towards you

Why?

Rule 206 of The Highway Code says watch out for people around stopped vehicles. A driver making a delivery may open a door or walk into the road, so slow down, leave room and be ready to stop (Rule 146).

Highway Code rules 206, 146
