Hazard awareness

The traffic lights ahead have been green for a long time as you approach them. What should you anticipate?

  • They will definitely stay green until you pass
  • You should speed up to beat the change
  • They may change to amber, so be ready to stop
    Correct
  • Green always means you may go, whatever else happens

Why?

Rule 146 of The Highway Code says be prepared for changing situations and adjust your speed as a precaution. Lights that have been green for a while (a 'stale' green) may change to amber as you arrive, so ease off and be ready to stop safely.
