Hazard awareness

You are following a cyclist who is approaching a drain cover and some potholes. What should you expect?

  • The cyclist will ride straight over them without moving
  • The cyclist will stop and get off the bike
  • The cyclist will speed up to jump over them
  • The cyclist may suddenly move out to avoid them, so give plenty of room
    Correct

Why?

Rule 213 of The Highway Code says cyclists may suddenly need to avoid drain covers, potholes and uneven surfaces and may change direction. Give them plenty of room and be ready for a sudden move.
