Hazard awareness

You are following a large lorry that blocks your view of the road ahead. What should you do?

  • Drop back so you can see more of the road and be seen in its mirrors
    Correct
  • Move up close behind to save fuel in its slipstream
  • Overtake at once, even as you approach a bend
  • Flash your headlights until it moves over

Why?

Rule 164 of The Highway Code says when following a large vehicle, drop back. This increases your view of the road ahead and lets the lorry driver see you in their mirrors, so you can spot hazards and overtake safely (Rule 126).

Highway Code rules 164, 126
