Hazard awareness

You want to pull out of a side road, but parked cars block your view of the main road. What should you do?

  • Pull out quickly and hope the road is clear
  • Rely only on your hearing to judge the traffic
  • Sound your horn and drive straight out
  • Edge forward slowly until you can see clearly before joining
    Correct

Why?

Rule 146 says be prepared for difficult situations and adjust your speed, and Rule 170 says at junctions watch out for road users and give way. Where parked cars hide your view, edge forward slowly until you can see the road is clear before pulling out.

Highway Code rules 146, 170
