Incidents, accidents and emergencies

Your car has broken down on a blind bend on a country road. What is the safest thing to do?

  • Stay sitting in the car in the middle of the road
  • Place a warning triangle right beside the car on the bend
  • Get yourself and any passengers to a safe place and warn traffic in good time
    Correct
  • Stand in the road and wave your arms at drivers

Why?

Rule 276 of The Highway Code and the first-aid advice in Annex 7 are about being seen in good time. On a blind bend, a warning triangle beside the car is spotted too late, so the safest action is to get everyone to a safe place off the road and warn approaching traffic early.
