Incidents, accidents and emergencies

You are involved in a crash with a tanker that is showing hazard warning plates. What should you do?

  • Open the tanker to see what is leaking
  • Switch off engines, keep well clear, don't smoke, and tell the emergency services what the plates say
    Correct
  • Light a flare so other drivers can see the tanker
  • Try to move the tanker off the road yourself

Why?

Rule 285 of The Highway Code deals with incidents involving dangerous goods. Switch off engines, do not smoke and keep well away, because the load may be flammable or toxic. When you call the emergency services, tell them the information shown on the hazard warning plates.
