Other types of vehicle

You are following a large lorry and want to overtake. Why is it important to drop back first?

  • So the lorry driver can wave you past when it is clear
  • So you can see further ahead and the driver can see you in the mirrors
    Correct
  • So you use less fuel while you wait
  • So you can draft closely behind and save time

Why?

Large vehicles have big blind spots, especially close behind. Rule 164 of The Highway Code reminds you that if you cannot see the lorry's mirrors, the driver cannot see you. Dropping back also lets you see further along the road so you can judge whether it is safe and legal to overtake.
