Other types of vehicle

An emergency vehicle is coming up behind as you near a junction. Why should you avoid braking harshly?

  • It wastes your brakes
  • The driver behind may not see the emergency vehicle and could run into you
    Correct
  • It is illegal to brake near a junction
  • The emergency vehicle will have to stop too

Why?

Rule 219 of The Highway Code advises not to brake harshly on the approach to a junction or roundabout when letting an emergency vehicle pass, because a following driver may not have the same view and could hit you. Stay calm and choose a safe place.
