Other types of vehicle

On a fast dual carriageway you see a works vehicle ahead with a flashing amber beacon. What should you do?

  • It is slow-moving, so ease off early because you are closing on it quickly
    Correct
  • Treat it as an emergency vehicle and stop
  • Keep your speed, as amber beacons can be ignored
  • Flash your lights to make it move over

Why?

Rule 225 of The Highway Code says a flashing amber beacon warns of a slow-moving or stationary vehicle. On a fast road the speed difference is large, so slow down early and be ready to move over safely as you approach.
