Other types of vehicle

Ahead, a large lorry is slowly reversing into a side road while a person on foot guides it. What should you do?

  • Drive past quickly on either side
  • Sound your horn to hurry the driver
  • Wait and keep well back, as the driver's view is limited and relies on the guide
    Correct
  • Squeeze through the gap behind the lorry

Why?

A reversing lorry has large blind areas, which is why Rule 202 of The Highway Code says drivers should get someone to guide them when they cannot see clearly. Keep well back, be patient and let the manoeuvre finish before you pass.

Highway Code rules 202, 222
