Other types of vehicle

Ahead, two horse riders are riding side by side and one appears to be a child. What is the safest action?

  • Overtake between them and the kerb
  • Be patient; they may ride two abreast to protect the young rider, so pass wide and slow
    Correct
  • Sound your horn so they move into single file
  • Accelerate past as closely as you can

Why?

Rule 215 of The Highway Code says to take great care around horse riders. Riders often go two abreast to shield a young or nervous rider and horse. Slow to no more than 10 mph, be patient and pass wide, leaving at least 2 metres.
