Safety and your vehicle

How often should you check your engine oil, coolant and screenwash levels?

  • Regularly, such as once a week and before a long journey
    Correct
  • Only when a garage services the car once a year
  • Only when a warning light comes on
  • Never, because they do not change with normal use

Why?

Fluids drop over time and low levels can damage the engine or leave you unable to clean the windscreen. Annex 6 of The Highway Code advises you to check levels such as oil, coolant and screenwash regularly, for example weekly and before a long trip, so small problems are found early.
