What is the main benefit of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) in an emergency?
- It helps you keep steering control while braking hardCorrect
- It always stops the car in a much shorter distance
- It removes the need to look where you are going
- It lets you brake safely with two wheels off the road
Why?
ABS stops the wheels from locking up, so the tyres keep gripping and you can still steer. Rule 120 of The Highway Code explains that ABS should help you keep steering control, but warns you should not expect it to shorten your stopping distance.
