Safety and your vehicle
Which statement about anti-lock brakes (ABS) is TRUE?
- ABS lets you drive faster in the wet with no extra risk
- ABS always stops the car in half the distance
- ABS works best if you keep pumping the pedal
- ABS may not shorten your stopping distance, so keep a safe gapCorrect
Why?
ABS helps you steer while braking hard, but it does not defeat the laws of grip. Rule 120 of The Highway Code warns that you should not assume a vehicle with ABS will stop in a shorter distance, so you must still leave a safe following gap.
