Safety and your vehicle
Your car starts to produce a lot of exhaust smoke. What should you do?
- Have the fault repaired, as it wastes fuel and harms the environmentCorrect
- Ignore it, as exhaust smoke is normal for every car
- Drive faster to clear the smoke from the engine
- Block the exhaust pipe to stop the smoke
Why?
Heavy smoke means the engine is not burning fuel properly, which pollutes the air and can be illegal. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says the exhaust system must be working, and Rule 123 reminds drivers of their duty to reduce the impact of their vehicle on the environment, so get the fault fixed.
