Safety and your vehicle

It has snowed overnight. What MUST you do before you drive off?

  • Clear snow and ice from all windows and demist the glass so you can see
    Correct
  • Clear only a small hole in the windscreen to look through
  • Leave the snow on the roof and drive slowly
  • Drive off at once, as the heater will clear it as you go

Why?

You must be able to see all around before moving. Rule 229 of The Highway Code says you must clear all snow and ice from every window, make sure lights and number plates are clean and legible, and demist the glass thoroughly before setting off in icy or snowy weather.
