Safety and your vehicle

You are driving a quiet electric car near pedestrians. Why do you need extra care?

  • Electric cars cannot brake as well as other cars
  • Pedestrians are always looking at electric cars
  • Electric cars are not allowed near pedestrians
  • Pedestrians may not hear you coming and could step out
    Correct

Why?

Electric and hybrid cars make very little noise at low speed, so people may not notice you approaching. Rule 125 of The Highway Code says you should reduce your speed when sharing the road with pedestrians, who may not be able to hear a quiet vehicle.
