What is the main problem with 'coasting', driving with the clutch down or in neutral for a long way?
- It saves a large amount of fuel with no downside
- It reduces your control, especially your braking and steeringCorrect
- It makes the tyres last much longer
- It is the safest way to go down a steep hill
Why?
Coasting removes the engine braking that helps hold your speed. Rule 122 of The Highway Code warns that coasting reduces driver control because the car may speed up downhill and steering response is affected, and it does not really save fuel.
