Safety and your vehicle

Your steering suddenly feels very heavy or the car pulls to one side on a straight road. What is the safest response?

  • Grip the wheel harder and keep going for as long as you can
  • Slow down safely and have the steering checked before driving on
    Correct
  • Speed up so the steering feels lighter
  • Let go of the wheel to see if it corrects itself

Why?

Heavy or uneven steering can point to a fault such as a soft tyre, low power-steering fluid or a suspension problem. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says steering must be in good working order, so slow down safely and get it checked rather than carrying on.
