Safety and your vehicle

What should you look for when checking your tyres before a long journey, apart from the pressure?

  • That the tyres are painted the same colour
  • That the tyres are warm to the touch
  • Cuts, bulges and objects stuck in the tread, as well as enough tread depth
    Correct
  • That the wheels are as shiny as possible

Why?

Damage you cannot feel while driving can cause a sudden blow-out. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says tyres must be in good condition with the legal tread depth, so check for cuts, bulges and stuck objects, and that the tread is at least 1.6 mm.
