You are parking your car facing downhill on a slope. What should you do to help stop it rolling?
- Leave it in neutral with the handbrake off
- Apply the handbrake firmly, select reverse gear and turn the wheels towards the kerbCorrect
- Select a forward gear and turn the wheels away from the kerb
- Turn the wheels straight ahead and rely on the handbrake alone
Why?
If the brakes were to slip, the kerb should stop the car rolling into the road. Rule 252 of The Highway Code says when facing downhill you should apply the handbrake firmly, select reverse gear and turn your wheels towards the kerb; use 'park' if the car is automatic.
