While driving, the steering suddenly becomes much heavier and harder to turn. What has most likely happened?
- Your tyres have suddenly gripped the road better
- The brakes have come on by themselves
- The power-assisted steering has failed, so steering now needs much more effortCorrect
- Nothing is wrong, as heavy steering is normal at speed
Why?
If the power-assisted steering stops working, you can still steer but it takes far more effort to turn the wheel. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says steering must be in good working order, so keep a firm hold, slow down safely and have it checked before driving on.
