Safety and your vehicle

The brake pedal feels spongy and you have to pump it before the brakes bite. What does this suggest?

  • The brakes are working better than usual
  • It is normal and needs no attention
  • You should brake harder and keep driving for weeks
  • There may be air or low fluid in the system, so have the brakes checked
    Correct

Why?

A spongy pedal that must be pumped often means air has got into the hydraulic system or the brake fluid is low, so the brakes are not working fully. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says brakes must be in good working order, so stop and have this fault checked before driving on.
