Safety and your vehicle

Your exhaust suddenly becomes very loud. What does this most likely mean?

  • There is a fault, such as a hole in the exhaust, that should be repaired
    Correct
  • The engine is running perfectly and needs nothing
  • The car will use less fuel from now on
  • You should drive faster to quieten it down

Why?

A sudden loud noise usually means a blown or holed exhaust, which can be noisy, illegal and let fumes into the car. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says the exhaust system must be working, so have it repaired promptly.
