Safety and your vehicle

When may you sound your horn?

  • While your vehicle is moving and you need to warn others you are there
    Correct
  • To tell a slow driver in front to hurry up
  • While stationary in a built-up area late at night to greet a friend
  • To show your anger at another road user

Why?

The horn is a warning device, not a way to scold others. Rule 112 of The Highway Code says use it only while moving and when you need to warn others of your presence, and never sound it aggressively or while stationary on a road in a built-up area between 11.30 pm and 7.00 am.
