Safety and your vehicle

Which of these is against the rules and also a theft risk?

  • Locking the car and taking the key with you
  • Closing all the windows when you leave
  • Leaving the car unattended with the engine running
    Correct
  • Putting valuables in the locked boot out of sight

Why?

A car left running with nobody in it is easy to steal and wastes fuel. Rule 123 of The Highway Code says you must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running, and Rule 239 adds that you should always lock it and remove the key.

Highway Code rules 123, 239
