Safety and your vehicle

You are loading your car with heavy luggage for a long motorway trip. What should you do about tyre pressures?

  • Let some air out so the tyres grip better
  • Leave them, as load makes no difference to pressure
  • Set them far below normal to give a softer ride
  • Adjust them for the heavier load, as advised in the vehicle handbook
    Correct

Why?

A heavy load and high motorway speeds put extra strain on tyres. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says tyres must be correctly inflated, and the handbook usually gives a higher pressure for a full load, so set them to that before the journey.
