Safety and your vehicle
You need to stop in an emergency in a car fitted with ABS. How should you use the brake?
- Pump the brake pedal quickly on and off
- Press the brake pedal firmly and keep it pressed until you have slowed enoughCorrect
- Press the brake gently so the ABS does not switch on
- Put the clutch down first and coast to a stop
Why?
With ABS you do not need to pump the pedal, as the system does the rapid braking for you. Rule 120 of The Highway Code says in an emergency you should apply the footbrake firmly and not release it until the car has slowed to the speed you want.
